When football (American soccer) is the most popular sporting event in your country and your team just won a national championship, a high-profile event worthy of a royal celebration is merited. Thus, in celebration of the 2019 Johor Southern Tigers Football Club’s Super League championship, 300 Intel drones lit up the sky before cheering fans and the Crown Prince of Johor.
The spectacular event was held in the city square of Johor Bahru. Thousands of fans turned out to watch the show which featured sparkling images of the Johor team logo (a tiger), the trophy, the Malaysian national crest, and to big cheers, an animated player kicking a soccer ball – all set to lights and lively music.
The Prince of Johor, who is also president of the Johor Football Association and past president of the Football Association of Malaysia, is a serious football promotor and fan. He, as well as other Malaysian leaders, hope to become joint hosts of the FIFA World Cup in 2034. But for the present, celebrating a national victory felt like a world event to thousands of Southern Tigers Football Club fans.
