The capital city of Malaysia marked the transition from 2019 to a new decade with a fantastic celebration of lights, music, food, fireworks, celebrities, and heads of state, including Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad. For the 30,000 spectators who gathered at a park at the base of the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, the highlight of the evening was the drone light show featuring 300 Intel drones.
Titled “VM2020 Light Show in the Sky,” the performance featured 11 animations that spotlighted the attractions of this Southeast Asian country. These included colorful images of a wau bulan (ornate kite), trishaw (three-wheeled bicycle-powered passenger cart), a hornbill (Malaysia’s national bird), the Malaysian flag, and the logo of the Ministry of Tourism. Software developed specifically for Intel Drone Light Shows allowed the drones to safely create these dynamic animations in the crowded urban environment.
The New Year’s Eve celebration was also the ideal opportunity for the tourism board, who organized the event, to launch their new slogan: Visit Malaysia 2020. Whether watching from home, afterwards on YouTube (more than 180K views), or live at the celebration, the show was a fitting kickoff to the beginning of a new era for the people and visitors to this country.
